The kora is a 21-string West African harp-lute, traditionally crafted from a large calabash gourd covered in cowhide, with a hardwood neck and nylon strings. Originating in the Gambia and central to Mandinka culture, it is played by jali (hereditary praise singers/storytellers) to produce complex, polyrhythmic melodies often compared to flamenco guitar.
