About Auguste Rodin:
He was born in Paris in 1840 into a working-class family.
He studied sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
In 1875, he traveled to Italy, where he was influenced by Renaissance sculpture.
His first major work was “The Age of Man” (1877), a nude male figure that was accused of being sculpted from a living model.
In 1880, he began work on the Gates of Hell, a monumental work that was never completed.
In 1882, he created “The Thinker,” a figure originally conceived as part of the Gates of Hell.
In 1897, he was commissioned to create a statue of Balzac, which was completed in 1906.
In 1916, he donated his home, art collection, and sculptures to the French nation.
He died in Meudon in 1917.
