Painted during Gauguin’s first stay in Tahiti, Street in Tahiti reflects the artist’s desire to break away from European artistic traditions and immerse himself in what he perceived as a more authentic and unspoiled environment. Arriving in Tahiti in 1891, Gauguin sought subjects that would allow him to develop a new visual language, one that emphasized emotion, symbolism, and personal expression over naturalistic representation.
