UPDATE: HIS NAME WAS JUAN JAIRO CORONILLA DURÁN
When I first documented this death on Substack, his identity had not been released. Now we know his name.
Juan Jairo Coronilla Durán was legally in the United States on a tourist visa. He had been in Florida for only two days before an ICE traffic stop ended with him being struck and killed by a semitruck along State Road 16 in St. Augustine on July 14.
He was the third man in one week to die during an ICE traffic stop.
Five days later, his wife, Yesica Alamilla López, still had not been told where his body was.
“She wants a proper burial back home with his family, with his parents, and with his siblings.”
The Mexican Consulate in Orlando is now helping Yesica return her husband’s remains to Guanajuato, Mexico.
The first record documented an unidentified man killed after an ICE encounter.
This update restores what was missing: his name, his legal status, his wife, his family, and the body they are still trying to bring home.
