ROTWR BREAKING NOTE — ISRAEL INTERCEPTS HUMANITARIAN FLOTILLA; IRISH PRESIDENT'S SISTER AMONG THOSE DETAINED

Monday, May 18, 2026

Israeli naval forces boarded and seized vessels from the Global Sumud Flotilla on Monday morning in international waters approximately 70 nautical miles off the coast of Cyprus, detaining an unknown number of activists including at least 11 Irish citizens. Among those detained is Dr Margaret Connolly, the sister of Irish President Catherine Connolly.

aljazeera.com/news/2026…that Israeli military personnel boarded several boats from the convoy as it attempted to reach the besieged Gaza Strip, with the interception happening 250 nautical miles from Gaza's shores — well within international waters. The flotilla, comprising more than 50 vessels that departed from the Turkish port of Marmaris last week, had their radar jammed by Israeli forces before troops carrying assault rifles boarded the ships and ordered participants to their hands and knees, according to organiser accounts confirmed by the Washington Post. Israel's Foreign Ministry said it "will not allow any breach of the lawful naval blockade on Gaza."

thejournal.ie/gaza-flot… Dr Margaret Connolly said: "If you are watching this video, it means I have been kidnapped from my boat in the flotilla by the Israeli occupying forces, and I'm now being held illegally in an Israeli prison." Irish flotilla organisers said 15 Irish citizens were aboard, with 11 now understood to have been detained. The remaining four are still sailing and described as "imminently at risk."

Irish President Catherine Connolly, who was in London meeting King Charles when the news broke, told reporters she had not yet been able to speak to her sister. "It's quite upsetting, and I'm very worried about her, and I'm also very concerned about her colleagues on board," she said. She added that she was "very proud" of her sister. Taoiseach Micheál Martin issued a formal condemnation, calling the interceptions "wholly unacceptable" and saying the Irish government had raised concerns with Israeli authorities, demanding the immediate release of all detained Irish citizens.

Turkey's Foreign Ministry condemned the interception as "an act of piracy." President Erdogan called on the international community to act. The Global Sumud Flotilla called the operation "illegal acts of piracy" and described Israel as having "abducted our volunteers."

This is not the first interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla. In late April, Israeli forces intercepted an earlier wave of flotilla vessels near the Greek island of Crete, arresting approximately 175 activists and jamming their communications in international waters. amnesty.org/en/latest/n… that activists from the April interception reported sleep deprivation, denial of drinking water and medical care, and at least four individuals reported sexual assault while in Israeli custody. Italian prosecutors in Rome are currently investigating those abuses as potential torture.

Israel's stated position is that its Gaza naval blockade is lawful, that the flotilla is a "show" given that the Gaza Board of Peace manages humanitarian aid through official channels, and that "the purpose of this provocation is to serve Hamas." Israel's Foreign Ministry said more than 1.58 million tons of humanitarian aid has entered Gaza through official channels since October 2025. Flotilla organisers dispute that characterisation and say the blockade continues to prevent direct civilian humanitarian access.

The Global Sumud Flotilla has been on ROTWR's story hold list since the beginning of this project. We will have a full report in tonight's Evening Edition.
