I am beginning to think Lesslie Newbigin is the perfect 20th-century theologian to bridge the conservative/liberal theological divide.
Conservatives would love his emphasis on mission and evangelism, while more liberal theology might struggle with it. I find there isn’t a wide range of conversation about it in the Protestant mainline.
Newbigin, in The Open Secret, also argues for both a NT multiple Christologies and an approach to culture of “always interpreting.” This is aligned enough with 20th-century liberal theology to appeal to some, but conservatives might be frightened at how he speaks of the canon in context.
In short, please read Newbigin.
