The app for independent voices

Shopify’s CEO is now shipping more code than ever.

His GitHub profile shows the number of commits has increased 10x from 94 in 2024 to 957 today so far.

What’s interesting to me, is the kinds of projects Shopify’s CEO is contributing to.

They include:

  • Liquid Language Evolution - reworking Shopify's open-source Liquid engine with new implementations, compilers, specs, and performance boosts - directly benefiting Shopify's templating stack.

  • Ruby Developer Tools with a heavy focus on speeding up Ruby workflows, reproducibility, and ecosystem improvements.

  • Personal Experiments and Hobbies - config tools, experiment managers, and motorsport-related data/telemetry apps, possibly for sim racing (e.g., Assetto Corsa, IMSA series).

Liquid is Shopify's templating backbone which means every shop’s theme, every merchant customization runs through it. So in a sense, he’s using his own behavior to prototype and validate the cultural transformation he's previously demanded of the company.

Fascinating to see how CEOs can now improve their own product’s ecosystem by directly contributing to their open source projects. It’ll be interesting to see how many other CEOs follow suit.
