AI Agents Are Creating a New Payment Layer for the Internet

Stripe's head of AI recently declared that "the internet has a new economic actor", arguing that the economic infrastructure of the internet has changed forever.

Traditional checkouts were built for humans clicking through forms. But since agents don't click, they need machine-readable payment protocols, credential systems that don't expose card data, and settlement at speeds humans never required.

Over the past year, new technologies across five distinct layers have emerged to solve this:

  1. Protocols - x402, MPP, ACP, UCP - each giving agents a way to discover pricing and pay without a browser interface.

  2. Credentials - Shared Payment Tokens and wallet delegation systems so agents can spend without holding raw card numbers.

  3. Identity - Cryptographic mandates and agent registration so someone can prove a human actually authorized each transaction.

  4. Billing - Real-time metering and streaming payments, because token-level consumption requires token-level settlement.

  5. Settlement rails - Stablecoins processing transactions in seconds for fractions of a cent.

In the latest Deep Dive, I explore new releases across each of these layers from companies including Stripe, Adyen, Google, Visa and more to try and make sense of it all for product teams.
