What does academic integrity even mean in a world full of AI generated slop?

Students' papers are already full of AI-generated article titles and quotes that don't exist. What happens when graduate students and faculty have resumes with papers that also don't exist?

A tenure track professor who went to a research university for their MS and PhD can easily have +100 co-authored publications. Is a tenure committee going to check each one to make sure that it's real? There are thousands of paywalled journals and an AI agent can easily make fake cover pages and links to populate a researcher's personal website.

What happens when some other students and researchers cite fake papers in articles that actually get peer reviewed and published? Those citations can get pulled into other "real" lit reviews and suddenly there is "real" canon of academic literature built on a fabricated foundations.
