This essay began as a policy analysis of the Heritage Foundation’s recent report on family structure. It became something more personal. I have tried to approach the topic seriously, historically, philosophically, and honestly. The goal is not to dismiss the desire for strong families. It is to ask what kind of civic framework best sustains them.
