By default, those of us on the left have inherited guardianship of the integrity of American democratic institutions. We need to frame our brand as the ones who now best understand, care about, honor, and protect democracy, the rule of law, peace and security, the Constitution, the separation of powers, freedom of the press, individual rights, equality of opportunity, freedom from tyranny and, believe it or not, even states' rights. Trump has taken a shit on Reagan's "shining city upon on a hill." Democrats would be foolish to let this opportunity get away.
