I really like Substack. But I personally find its purported mission of creating “a new economic engine for culture” to be patently absurd. If anything, it is destroying culture. Culture happened when we all sat before the almighty tube, watching Cronkite’s nightly broadcast. It happens when we’re all talking about the Game of Thrones finale on Monday at the office. Culture requires a collective, shared experience. Culture does not happen when everyone’s reading their own niche source of reality on the internet.
