I checked out the Huawei 5G situation. As Bill mentioned Huawei never admits its new phones (Mate 60 and Mate 60 Pro) are 5G phones.
1. Printed "卫星移动终端""satellite communications mobile terminal" on the box. Not "5G数字移动电话机" as usual
Registered as "卫星移动终端" with the gov (进网许可证), not "5G数字移动电话机"
2. Does not display the symbol of 5G signal on the screen, when internet speed test clearly shows 5G speed.
3. No info about cellular network compatibility on the spec sheet on Huawei's website. All the other Huawei phones have this info clearly listed (4G/3G/2G compatibility).
Hypothesis:
1. Promoting satellite communications which is a new function. It allows for emergency phone calls via satellite.
2. Don't want prying eyes on their reentry into 5G.
3. Something to do with evading export control. But how? Are the export controls worded explicitly such as "not to be used on 5G phones"? So by labeling the phone as a "satellite communications device" not a "5G phone" HW thinks it can use US tech on this "satellite device"?
