Women punished norm-breakers at relatively high rates regardless of the social context. But men behaved differently in one specific context: when they were observed by other male participants, they were much less likely to punish transgressors. Put simply, women were consistently willing to take on the unpleasant task of enforcing shared rules regardless of who was watching them.
