Make money doing the work you believe in

How did luxury beliefs become fashionable?

Over time, it became low status to show off wealth in obvious ways. Big logos, flashy cars, and expensive watches started to look tacky in elite circles. If you had real status, you were not supposed to brag about it.

But the human desire for status did not disappear. It never does. People still want to rise in rank and show where they stand. So the signal changed.

Instead of showing status with material goods, many people began to show it through ideas and opinions. These are often bold, unconventional, or tied to fashionable social movements. The competition moved from the world of things to the world of culture.

This is where cultural capital comes in. Economic capital is money and assets. Cultural capital is harder to see. It includes taste, language, credentials, and the “right” beliefs. You can earn money and buy something expensive without changing who you are. Cultural capital is different. You have to learn it slowly. You need to know the right words, the right views, and the right causes. You have to keep up with trends and signal that you understand them.

So the competition for status did not fade. It simply changed form. It is less about what you own and more about what you believe, and how skillfully you present those beliefs to others.
