In his 2019 book "Good Reasons for Bad Feelings," the evolutionary psychiatrist Randolph Nesse points out something fascinating:

The standard way to tell if an antidepressant will be effective is to see if it makes an animal persist in useless efforts. The Porsolt test measures how long a rat swims when dropped in a beaker of water.

Rats on antidepressants swim longer.
