Having me as a child wasn’t easy. A gay, disabled kid growing up in a working-class, down-on-its-luck industrial town in the heart of England? That wasn’t easy for me either.
She comes from a generation that didn’t talk about disabilities. Didn’t talk about being gay. Didn’t talk much at all about difference.
But here’s what she did: she changed.
She changed her worldview so I could fit into her world. She stretched, she learned, she listened. She chose love over fear.
That’s what real love is.
Happy birthday, Mum.
Love, Rob
