There are few things—and few drinks—these days that stay “local.” But, as far as I know, Ricard remains largely a French thing.

I’ve seen it on back bars in the US, but it’s not common.

Here, when you ask for “a Ricard” they give you a little glass with ice, a pour of Richard and water on the side to add as you please.

It’s my second favorite to Fernet Branca, I think.

But twice when I asked for it in Paris they thought I was asking for the check!!
