A few snapshots from walks in different part of the world. Two from a market in Lithuania in 2004. Two from recent walks in our local area.

I rediscovered the Lithuania photos recently, having not looked at them for nearly twenty years. They brought back a mini flood of memories: staying in Vilnius with a friend on two-year placement with the British embassy; visiting Aukštaitija national park and navigating our way through the forest after discovering a beaver damn that had flooded the path. And this market in one of Vilnius’s old town squares.

The peacock and the dog are from much more recent explorations in an area I know well. The Brede Valley from Winchelsea is one of my favourite views anywhere in the world. It changes weekly, as the weather changes, as the river floods and ebbs, as the valley is alternately under water and grazed by cattle. This whole valley was once permanently under water and it’s a fabulous spot to imagine centuries of changing landscape history.

Pickle is used to waiting for me to take yet another photo every time we walk this way. Occasionally he even makes it into a shot.

The peacock was more of a surprise. I’ve walked past the stone geese that flank this gateway several times. This was the first time the peacock made an appearance and posed perfectly between the geese.
