Substack really needs to figure out the metered paywall. I like Substack, but it’s not set up well enough yet for publications like The Metropolitan Review. The Substack-style paywall makes zero sense for us because then we’re paywalling random reviews or essays, and an author gets screwed that way. It’s why TMR is free to read. But I’d be very open to a metered paywall—everyone gets 5 free pieces a month, or something like that, and then the paywall shoots up. That’s how the Times does it, NY Mag, a bunch of different places. It works. Substack needs to get with the times a bit.
