Once a year, in my class on the Christian life, we spend a whole 3-hour lecture just walking through five chapters in the Book of Leviticus (16-20). I advertise it as “a key to understanding the whole Old Testament.” Imagine three hours talking with a room full of twenty-somethings about not mixing two types of material in your clothes, prohibitions on blood drinking and incest, the meaning of menstrual uncleanness, and the problem of child sacrifice. This year I couldn’t get through it all in the three hours allotted, and the group asked if we could do ONE MORE HOUR! Four hours on Leviticus. It was a happy moment for me as a teacher. This isn’t exactly what I taught on, but it’s a glimpse.
