Seeing so much content enthusing over 7 For All Mankind (?!) and arguing about Clavicular makes me think a lot of American designers do themselves a disservice by staging a fashion show. The scene and discourse around fashion shows in New York is so lame right now; why associate with it? You could better connect with customers and editors through retail, trunk shows or a super intimate presentation format. (Look at how buzzy Colleen Allen is even though she’s never done a show.)
At the same time, I see a show like Eckhaus Latta, Marc Jacobs or Anna Sui and think it wouldn’t have had the impact without the setting, models, music, styling, crowd….
So maybe the issue is also that too many editors/influencers/show attendees are unable to tune out the noise of runway dazzle and think about what women actually want to wear and what they deserve and whether what’s in front of them meets those standards.
