Babylon x Brooks 3M Ghost 17 “Break The Map” coming Saturday 11/15.
This is some of my favorite work from a Brooks collab. 2 separate short films from the perspective of a businesswear stiff in their 9-5 in Tokyo and LA. Common trope of subverting the work place. Reminds me a bit of Nike’s “I’m Never Taking This Off” video with Cole Hocker thematically.
The Tokyo film hits hardest if you’re familiar with the cultural themes at play. A salary(wo)man snaps, and storms out of the office after being assigned extra work late on a Friday.
Gaman, self-control, is a core tenant in Japan culture.
Overtime is the norm in corporate culture for salarymen. Karoshi is translated as “overwork death.” In the late 80s and early 90s, 60 hour work weeks were common.
Gender norms - Women are expected to maintain a certain appearance and face a lot of obstacles still in the workplace.
Brooks is bringing lifestyle energy to their running line. That started with the PYNRS collab a few weeks ago and there will be much more to come throughout the next year.
