I understand what is being said, but I have been thinking about the problems with language in a different way.
I look at words like “woke” and “racism” that have defined meanings in their origins, but are then mangled by White people who self-define themselves as “left” or “progressive”. These strict individualists are generally focused on being seen as “one of the good ones”, and are focused on their personal reputation over ever trying to understand the systems or social constructs being discussed.
They conflate Racism with Rudeness. They never bother to learn that Race is a social construct that imposes a social hierarchy that places subjectively defined “Whites” at the top and everyone else at various levels below. It is about group differentiation, and nothing to do with the individuals at all. Race (Racialization) is something that is done to people(s), not something which they are.
These sleep walking (not woke) “progressive” individuals projecting their “I’m not racist” point fingers at others and claim “they are one of the bad ones”. Those who are “othered” by “progressives” then push back from the rude behaviour of performative self-identifying “progressives”, who then oppose the policies the “progressives” claim to support.
Now we have STOP WOKE which is a reaction to a cultural appropriation of the word “woke” that has nothing to do with the original meaning of the word “woke”.
To me, this is an example where self-identified “progressives” generated the language issue in the first place, in their focus on personal reputation over actual social justice.
So yes, please, stop trying to police language. This is especially true if you have no clue what the words mean yourself and are only trying to protect your personal reputation!
