The app for independent voices

The confusion around jurisdiction isn't helped by many civics classes I've been made aware of, which suggest the 3 "levels" of Canadian governments are Federal, Provincial and Municipal.

The reality is that municipal governments are provincial corporations, and not examples of responsible government. This is the same as Indian Act Band Councils which are federal corporations created/regulated/funded to administer Canadian federal government services, and not examples of responsible government.

The 3 types of governments relevant to the constitution aren't levels (one above the other), but have different jurisdictions: Canadian Federal crown, Canadian Provincial crowns, and Indigenous governments (in government-to-government relations with the Canadian Crown). This doesn't get adequately taught, and so many believe Section 35 of Canada's Constitution has something to do with individuals rather than treaty partners.

The fact that both the US and Canadian constitutions are antique gives them similarity that many other nation-states don't have. Other nations replace their constitutions more frequently, so the process and the meaning remains more fresh in the minds of citizens.

The USA and Britain aren't strictly "foreign influence" when it comes to Canada, as the core identity and values are also extremely similar within all parts of the Anglosphere (UK+CANZUS=England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States). This is more of family squabbles and sibling rivalry, than anything that can be truly thought of as “foreign”. The Five Eyes (FVEY) needs to be understood in the context of a family agreement, rather than an agreement between entities not otherwise related to each other.

BTW: I wish more people read the originals of these constitutional documents via the British Parliament, which itself helps understand the actual context of these laws rather than the myth that these are examples of self-governance.
