One of experts’ concerns about butterfly houses is how rearing the insects in captivity could change their genetics and make them less fit.

But the subject is not well studied, except in monarch butterflies - and those studies have found that there could be unintended consequences that could harm wild monarchs if too many captive-reared ones are released.

Could the same be true for the millions of tropical butterflies that are bred for butterfly houses all over the world every year?
