The absence of this relational knowledge is one reason—and I will die on this hill—if you find yourself disappointed or confused by a stranger’s approach to managing their kid, erring on the side of withholding judgement is in fact the rational move a lot of the time. It is also one reason that being in public with kids these days is so stressful, as it often involves being surrounded by people who do not have even baseline context for understanding the decisions you are making.
