Most people get better at the wrong thing.

They repeat a broken pattern until it feels comfortable, then call that progress.

I did this when I first started swimming for triathlon.

I swam continuous laps for months. Long, unbroken efforts.

I thought swimming was just like running.

You go, then you stop, then you’re done.

And here’s the thing - I wasn’t getting any better at swimming. I was just a little more comfortable doing it for longer.

One sentence from a stranger changed it.

“You should try to swim in sets. Take breaks.”

Four weeks of shorter sets, intentional rest, and focused drills taught me more about swimming than months of grinding ever did.

The pattern shows up everywhere.

More steady, mundane reps of a flawed movement. More hours of unfocused work. More miles at a pace that never challenges you.

Turns out I didn't need more of what wasn't working.

I needed less monotony and more intention.
