Given that June is the month dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, I feel St. John Chrysostom’s fifth homily on Hebrews is especially apt here. Our Lord took flesh “only for Love to man, that He might have mercy upon us.” And yet Chrysostom immediately preserves divine impassibility by adding that “God is incapable of suffering, but he [St. Paul] describes here what belongs to the Incarnation.” God’s mercy is made manifest in the true, suffering, compassionate humanity of the Word. That seems to capture the spirituality of the Sacred Heart beautifully, and the scholastic presentation has given me a new perspective to meditate upon.
