I don’t think there is a rationale behind the first writers who influenced me, apart from child me going “wow, we can do that? I wanna do it too!”
I was in awe at the kooky imagination of Anthony Horowitz’ children literature, especially Groosham Grange. Then, as a teen, I became obsessed with the internal monologues of Stephen King’s characters. French poet Arthur Rimbaud lifted the veil on the darkness of the soul. Ira Levin taught me quiet fear. French sci-fi author René Barjavel showed me the violent madness of humanity. Arturo Pérez-Reverte made me feel uneducated and craving for classics of literature and philosophy, which were my only readings for years after. Bret Easton Ellis made me look at the contemporary world once more, and suited my form before function tendency. Libraries and their choice in general shaped me.
I was drawn early to writers who build systems and scale. Daniel Defoe’s sentence structures fascinated me. Ian Banks and Richard Morgan shaped how I think about identity inside institutions.
