Egyptian magic, day 9: mud-brick pigeon houses are found all over the country. Pigeon keeping—for food, sport, and companionship—is big in Egypt, and sometimes you will see pigeon keepers waving flags on the rooftops of Cairo to signal their flocks! Here are a couple of the prettiest pigeon houses I’ve found.

Egyptian magic, day 8: Cairo has a diverse and excellent coffee/café culture, from ahwas—traditional spots that do shisha, tea, and Turkish coffee—to fancy espresso roasters. Pictured: my morning cup of joe, a honey latte with a hint of cinnamon (Brown Nose is perhaps a poor name choice but it’s a fantastic local roastery!!) and the kitschy Umm Kalthoum café in the Khan el Khalili.
