Pigeon keeping—for food, sport, and companionship—is big in Egypt, and sometimes you will see pigeon keepers waving flags on the rooftops of Cairo to signal their flocks! Here are a couple of the prettiest pigeon houses I’ve found.

Egyptian magic, day 8: Cairo has a diverse and excellent coffee/café culture, from ahwas—traditional spots that do shisha, tea, and Turkish coffee—to fancy espresso roasters. Pictured: my morning cup of joe, a honey latte with a hint of cinnamon (Brown Nose is perhaps a poor name choice but it’s a fantastic local roastery!!) and the kitschy Umm Kalthoum café in the Khan el Khalili.
