Make money doing the work you believe in

the single fastest growing publication on here is something called “president plump” which looks like it ought to be another tedious lib trump satire but is actually a kind of luminously meaningless outsider art. there’s not really anything here that’s even attempting to be a joke. instead it’s a fully developed fantasy world in which, for no obvious reason and to no clear effect, everything is about fruit and vegetables. all the countries are named after fruit, international disputes are all about the sensory qualities of various fruits. it’s not president plump because he’s fat: it’s trump if he were a plum. deranged. there’s also a recurring and deeply unsettling thread in which plump keeps blaming things on the sky and insisting that the sky is sentient. some of this material is obviously ai-generated but i’m pretty sure that a lot of it actually isn’t, there’s too much of an intensely private and psychotic relation to language. someone is doing this. everything about the account is extraordinary. it refers to its posts on substack notes, for reasons that really aren’t clear, as “LIES INTROVERT.” it’s written an extensive constitution for the “plumiverse” that features a whole roster of fictional characters, including chief of staff marigold finch and communications director randy “wires” halbrook, who are not a satire on anyone or anything at all. it only follows two other publications, one is a bunch of ai-generated substack growth tips and the other is matt taibbi. i’ve seen people speculate that the thousands of paid subscribers are fake, that this person is just paying themselves $5000 a month and letting substack take 10% in exchange for an orange tick. but i wouldn’t be so sure. people are reading this. some of the most ordinary people to have ever lived are reading this meaningless bilge and enjoying it as a straightforward political satire. forwarding 2000 words of fully deranged babble about apples and bananas to their nephews. “if you’re sick and tired of trump’s antics, you might just get a laugh out of this!” everything in the world is wonderful, i love it all so much
