Even though it’s sort of correct, the idea of knowledge being domain specific has done a lot of damage. It encourages us to think of subject boundaries as absolute, when actually the domains of knowledge are more like a series of interlocking and overlapping circles, some big, some small. The biggest circles - literacy, numeracy, logic - overlay many smaller domains.

But that doesn’t mean that critical thinking skills exist in a series of siloed boxes, each tied to a specific domain of knowledge, any more than the fact you need to use language in a different way in a biology long answer than to how you use it in a literature essay means there is nothing in the way you write that is common to both. There are general tools that can be used with multiple domains – its just that they also have to be used with some knowledge too.
