Getting old enough to notice that a lot people who go off the rails (theologically, morally, or even politically) start by making “not feeling less-than” their primary thing in life.

They feel less than {person/group x}. They don’t like feeling less-than them. So they start building an entire apparatus to assure themselves/convince others that they shouldn’t feel less-than.

And I wonder if we’ve underestimated the sanctifying value of just sitting in our insecurity instead of trying to philosophize our way out of it.
