I struggled for years to build a daily reading habit.
But now, I read books for at least an hour every day.
Some days I miss the mark. But I’m much more consistent than I used to be.
Here are 10 powerful tactics I’ve used to form a reading habit, stay motivated, and spend more of my free time immersed in great books:
Read something mind-altering for 25 minutes before work. (philosophy, history, classic literature, religious writing—anything bestowing wisdom)
Read something fun and light before bed. (for me that’s fantasy, contemporary novels, or narrative non-fiction)
Pick 1-2 Mastery Subjects to study deeply (I’ve found long-term self-education goals to be highly motivating)
Set yourself topical reading projects. (like 3 books by 1 writer, 4 war novels, or 5 books on developmental psychology)
Have multiple books going at once (so you always have a book that fits your mood/energy level)
Take online courses (or build your own) that require reading.
Find a reading buddy or join a Substack readalong.
Set a 10-minute timer when you don’t feel like reading.
Designate a cozy reading nook. (my lounge chair by the window)
Apply or create with the knowledge you’ve gained. (seeing the results of your reading makes reading all the more addicting)
The number one principle for reading more often?
Follow your curiosity over any recommended reading list.
