You’ll see the headlines, but you need to know the truth about what really happened at the men’s Olympic figure skating final, which was beyond gripping and painful to watch.

First, France’s Adam Siao Him Fa, third going into final, fell, eliminating his chances of ending up on the podium.

Then Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama, ranked second, whose skating can only be described as both sinuous and feather-like, fell twice—but still held on to his chances for the silver.

Then the USA’s sensational Ilia Malinin, the ‘quad god’ (no hyperbole—he does what no other human can do on ice), who was assured the gold, stunned everyone by falling twice.

What was really going on? Friday the 13th.

But then—because sometimes things somehow have a way of turning out beautifully—a 21-year-old skater from Kazakhstan, who no one really thought about and who often said that he was proof that anything is possible because he learned to skate in rink in a shopping mall, ended up taking the gold, the first Olympic medal of any kind for the country of Kazakhstan.

Even on the most unluckiest of days, a good thing can happen.
