Thinking about when I started oversharing online back in 2007. Before monetisation was possible, we didn't think about ‘followers, subscribers, or customers’ - it was much more about relationships with humans (even when we only knew each other by our blog taglines). This turned out to be an excellent grounding for the onslaught of socials in the coming years. I'm still amazed that there are these 'free' platforms that allow us to connect to everyone! That will never not feel a bit magical to me. But also the price of this (the self-doubt, maintaining creative energy, algorithm fuckery). I've always tried to see this as playing the online game - this necessitates finding ways for it to feel FUN. This approach has meant I have been able to house, feed and clothe myself for well over a decade by sharing the contents of my brain on The Gram, Pod and now Substack. My school career counsellor did not see that coming!
