Make money doing the work you believe in

A few months ago I read somewhere the suggestion that you post a Note introducing yourself to your audience, saying what brought you to Substack and what you are all about. I thought this sounded like a good idea, so here goes:

Hi! I'm Jenny Holland. I started my Substack, Saving Culture (from Itself) on the last day of 2020, sending out my first essay, unsolicited, to a bunch of personal acquaintances, all of whom were/are liberal-left-progressive. This was not something I relished, given the red pills I was about to drop on them — but since I had zero social media presence, it was kind of my only option.

Over time, my little Substack grew into a larger little Substack, as people found me. People who, like me, went from being a lib or a progressive, to being cast out of their tribe for being 'anti-vax,' or 'transphobic' or 'a Trumper.'

In the before times, I was a Brooklyn-dwelling 20 and 30 something working in media and government. I was a Gen X indie kid who worked on a sex positive feminist 'zine in university. My mother was a Trotskyist and my father a poet. I am one of many of my generation who grew up in the counter-culture, and as an adult, found it shockingly wanting.

I think this video, that I made in 2024, explains my position pretty well.
