The day I stopped talking

There was a moment in my coaching career when I made a decision.

To say less.

Not because I had nothing to offer.

But because I noticed something.

The more I talked, the less they thought.

And thinking is where the real development happens.

A player who arrives at their own answer owns it.

A player given an answer borrows it.

Borrowed answers don’t show up under pressure.

The hardest thing I’ve ever done as a coach is sit with silence long enough for the person in front of me to find their own way through.

But it’s produced some of the best moments I’ve witnessed in 27 years.

What would happen if you said half as much in your next coaching conversation?
