In the grand scheme of things, it won't really matter. But Liverpool should never have given Mohamed Salah a new contract last year. It was based purely on sentimentality. Fine. But it clearly pushed back the plans they already had in place (Wirtz & Co.) by at least a season.
Kinda reminds me of a chat I had in the pub with a friend a few weeks ago about Man City/Celtic losing their grip in the last few years. In the end, no club can maintain success forever because eventually human emotions dictate decisions in football. Sentimentality the most obvious one.
Clubs can scout the best players and have all the money in the world, but eventually, success leads to goodwill. Goodwill leads to managers and fans having their favourites. And no club wants to cut the cord with their favourite players. And that stops them from winning.
It's fundamentally human nature. We're flawed. And it's what makes football so fascinating. Dynasties rise and fall more often than not due to complacency and human error. And long may it continue.
