I’ve woken up in the middle of the night for years.
For a long time I found this incredibly frustrating and I thought something was wrong with me.
Then I came across the research of Thomas Wehr.
He found that when people were confined to darkness for 14 hours before and during sleep two interesting things happened:
They returned to a bi-phasic sleep pattern waking 3-4 hours after falling asleep
Between sleeps, many people would enter an altered state of consciousness akin to what the most advanced meditators experience
The latter has been something I have been experiencing for the past few years and I had no idea what to make of it.
It turns out that this mystical hour has been a well documented practice that ancient wisdom has pointed to for ages.
It seems as thought light pollution and the rythyms of modern of life have made us forget this wonderful communion that is available to every one of us each night.
I wrote more about this experience, research, and learnings here:
