Viktor Frankl lost his wife, his parents, and his brother in Nazi concentration camps. Spent three years in Auschwitz. Lost everything a person can lose. Still chose how he responded. Still built a life on the other side. His line: "Everything can be taken from a man but one thing - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances." If that man can choose his response, you can choose yours.
