Five years ago, at the start of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the overall domestic box office totalled around $54 million. This weekend’s domestic totals will add up to around $52 million. The whole “audiences don’t go to the movies just to go to the movies” situation has devolved from a frustration in the mid-2010s to a full-blown industry-wide crisis.
