HEAVY METAL MAGAZINE- NATIONAL LAMPOON, OTHER PUBLISHERS - 1977- I first came across Heavy Metal magazine when I was nine in the first comic drawing class I took… I was too young for the overtly sexual nature of some of the comics but it was clear to me that there was this artistic potential that wasn’t even being touched by the comics on the wire racks at 7-11. Flash forward, decades ahead, we’re living in Eugene, the comic store there consistently has old issues of Heavy Metal for a quarter! Over a few years, I manage to collect MOST of the early issues. I don’t like too many of the actual comics, I love the covers (I am reminded of my kids asking why 80s movies are so horny?), having to stand out on the news rack is a thing I’ve thought about a lot.
