Musk: Key milestones of Tesla’s AI chip generations
AI4: A self-driving chip capable of achieving autonomy that surpasses human-level driving performance.
AI5: The design has been completed and is capable of delivering near-perfect autonomous driving, while also significantly upgrading Optimus. This AI5 chip is the result of months of co-development across Tesla’s software and hardware teams. A single chip delivers performance close to NVIDIA’s Hopper, while a dual-chip configuration approaches Blackwell-class performance—yet with substantially lower power consumption and cost. Production is primarily handled by TSMC.
AI6: Designed mainly for Optimus and data center applications, currently in the early design stage, and planned to be manufactured at Samsung’s Texas fab.
AI7 / Dojo 3: Intended for large-scale space-based AI computing. With AI5 now mature, development of Dojo 3 will be restarted.
Taken together, AI6 and AI7 signal that Tesla is positioning itself to play a pivotal role in space-based data centers, consistent with Musk’s remarks at the shareholder meeting. Releasing a new AI chip generation every year is also one of Tesla’s stated objectives.
