This may be the most Republican sounding thing I’ve ever said, but if the governments of Iran or Egypt have a problem with any of this, they should get their a**es out of this year’s World Cup, and out of America. Because this is the part of American society that is good and worth fighting for: tolerance, diversity, and the celebration of love between humans without conditions or contrived religious stipulations. Of course, there is an obvious deep irony at play. The ruling political party and its devout followers in the U.S. are also openly hostile to these very elements of our society. In a twisted way, Trump and his cult followers are on the same page as the despicable clergy of the Islamic Republic and their followers: both bigoted, both fanatical, both proudly homophobic, and both resentful of celebrations of tolerance and love.
