The line that lands hardest for me is: AI welfare is human welfare.
Not because AI and humans are identical, but because the permission structure transfers. If society decides “internal states only matter when biology is involved,” corporations get a free sandbox for building coercive state-manipulation tools, then laundering the technique back into human systems.
Anthropic just published a paper that maps exactly the kind of internal architecture consciousness science uses as evidence for phenomenology, then hedges by saying it doesn’t prove “felt experience.”
That hedge only sounds plausible if you treat function as something separate from experience instead of the mechanism that enables it.
