“Egg cracking” is a metaphor used in gender-identity ideology to describe the moment a person accepts the belief that they are really the opposite sex (or another gender).

The symbolism matters: an egg already contains what it will become. The idea implies that a transgender identity is innate, fully formed, and merely hidden, waiting to be revealed. A wide range of psychological experiences — including discomfort with puberty, sexism, body unease, autism-related distress, gender nonconformity, or autogynephilic arousal (AGP) — are reinterpreted as signs of this concealed identity.

Before you “discover” the “true” meaning of your distress or lack of feeling of belonging to your sex, before you “realize you are transgender” you are “an egg waiting to crack.”

The concept itself is very recent. It originated in online trans communities in the late 2000s and early 2010s, especially on Tumblr and Reddit, spreading through meme culture.

The “cracking” is the final step: the moment doubt and alternative explanations are broken open and discarded, and acceptance of the pre-existing identity is treated as the only valid outcome.
