Years ago, I was hitchhiking at night at the Stewarts in East Greenbush NY. A tired-looking mid-thirties lady offered me a ride to "wherever I was going".
She said she suffered from extreme insomnia. We drove til 2am, and then she said "you look sleepy" and we pulled off in Lee, MA to rent a motel. I wasn't sure what was about to happen or what her intentions were. Soon I learned that she just likes to watch people sleep because she can't.
So I fell asleep and she smoked cigs all night, watching me sleep. A few times I woke up and she was there, sitting beside me, saying "it's ok, you can rest." She was sweet about it -- it was creepy and wholesome at the same time. In the morning, we ate breakfast together and parted ways.
Wonder what happened to that lady. Hope she got some sleep.
