There are so many boxes you have to check when crafting a good story, but these are the two I start with. If it can't hold other people's interest at a cocktail party, it doesn't have much of a chance anywhere else. And if the reader can't see the scenes in their head as they read along, then it's not going to work either. If it passes both those tests, you have something you can work with.
